Root rot occurs when the roots of a plant rot and decay. In order to prevent this from happening, cut up old sponges and put them at the bottom of a pot. The sponges retain moisture and create necessary air space. These sponges also help prevent the water from flushing out the bottom. They act as a water reserve and keep the soil moist for longer.
